Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS)

May 20, 2019

Have you heard of sodium lauryl sulfate? It is a detergent/surfactant that acts as a foaming agent. It is found in a wide-variety of over-the-counter cleaning, hair and skin care products. It is so widely-used because it is cheap.

BUT, sodium lauryl sulfate is not  good for our skin because it is an irritant. It can over strip your pores and lead to more blackheads & acne. Then your skin is irritated and dried-out. There is also evidence that it is "moderately" harmful to our organ system, eyes, and kidneys. I don't know about you, but I don't want to use anything that is even mildly harmful.

There are so many alternatives to this toxic substance. So, when shopping for products for your hair and skin, read the ingredients. If it contains sodium lauryl sulfate(SLS), then don't buy it. Look for products that say SLS-Free and no parabens. The best option is to buy professional-grade products for your hair and face, instead of over-the-counter. Yes, they will be a little more money, but your skin and health are worth it!

Here are a few of my favorite products that are free from sodium lauryl sulfate...
